Maybe you found this site while searching for a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school in the Spring TX area, or maybe you stumbled across us because you were simply “looking into” doing jiu-jitsu…
…but whatever the reason might be that you found us online, before you go I want to share a secret with you about training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (a.k.a. “BJJ”) that could possibly change your future – and maybe even save your life!
My name is Matt Smith, and I’m a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and decorated Army veteran living and teaching right here in the Spring area. I got involved with BJJ many years ago while in the service through an Army training program called Modern Army Combatives (MACP).
MACP is designed to be the most effective method of close-quarters protection for soldiers, and it’s meant to be taught in a short period of time.
That means it has to be:
So guess what martial art the Army decided to base Modern Army Combatives on? You guessed it – Brazilian jiu-jitsu!
Training in and eventually teaching combatives and self-defense to other soldiers is what got me hooked on jiu-jitsu, and it’s become a HUGE part of my life.
But the thing is, I started training jiu-jitsu for fighting (because a soldier deploying to combat has to know how to fight), but I stayed with it for much different reasons. Jiu-jitsu has helped me develop an inner calm and peace that I never had before training in BJJ.
It really has enriched my life so much, that I want to share it with others. That’s why I opened Halcyon Jiu-Jitsu here in Spring Texas, to serve the local community and to share the art I’ve come to enjoy so much.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu emphasizes leverage over force and skill over brute strength. From your first jiu-jitsu class, you’ll be learning how to use skill and leverage to not only survive, but dominate a physical encounter.
I call BJJ “the great equalizer”, because it can allow a smaller, weaker opponent to physically dominate a stronger and more aggressive attacker. This is a unique aspect of jiu-jitsu that simply isn’t found in other modern martial arts, most of which rely on brute force to overcome an assailant.
In fact, the late great Helio Gracie of Gracie jiu-jitsu fame proved this many times, as he was a slight man who often defeated larger opponents in challenge matches in his native Brazil. And, his son Royce Gracie carried on his legacy when at 170 pounds he defeated much larger opponents in the earliest UFC tournaments.
That’s why the Army chose to base their hand-to-hand combat training program on BJJ, and why it’s perfect for everyone from women, to professionals and executives, to soldiers and athletes. Anyone can do jiu-jitsu – anyone!
Jiu-jitsu literally means “the gentle art”, and what’s great about it is that you can practice jiu-jitsu realistically in a completely safe manner. And, that’s why jiu-jitsu is such a great way to get into shape – the movements, while natural and instinctive, also provide the best full-body workout you’ll ever get.
Let me tell you, everyone loses excess fat when they start doing jiu-jitsu. It’s a workout like none other, simultaneously strengthening the core (abs, back, and glutes) where all your power comes from, while toning and strengthening the arms, legs, chest, and shoulders.
And, Hollywood has caught onto the effectiveness of jiu-jitsu for staying in shape as well. Ashton Kutcher practices Brazilian jiu-jitsu, as does film mogul Guy Ritchie, veteran actor Nic Cage, comedian Joe Rogan, Sean Patrick Flannery (of Boondock Saints fame), Mel Gibson, rapper Ice-T, model-actresses Milla Jovovich and Adriana Lima, as well as No Reservations host Anthony Bourdain…
…and did you know that Ed O’Neill of Married With Children and Modern Family is a black belt in BJJ? So if Hollywood thinks it’s a good enough workout to get in “movie star” shape, don’t you think it’ll work for you, too?
